President's Corner

April is National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry which was introduced in 1996--and is organized by the Academy of American Poets. It is a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. Today, it is celebrated worldwide.

This poem is written in celebration of beautiful words that describe the work of Rotarians. It is written as “Expanded List”--a form of poetry which I created to help very young children enjoy success at writing poetry. The technique is described in my book “The Littlest Poets and Me.”

Lovin' Lunch Steps Out

After delivering lunch at the Mountain Center, Rotarians Dave Yarosh and Zerla Bartolome and PDG Karen DeMatteo stopped for lunch in Mt. Pocono at Fork St. Bistro. Not only did they support the local economy but they also took the opportunity to give owner Pam Watkins Safe Steps! Rotarians are always looking for opportunities to spread the word and encourage safe practices in our community.

District Peace Fellowship
Nancy Brittain, District Peace Fellowship Chair, presented information on this invaluable, amazing program. Fun fact: Our own Clarence Murphy was on the Committee for Peace Fellows for many years. The Rotary Foundation funded the Peace and Conflict Resolution to create network of peace building to empower and educate. Launched in 2002, Rotary Peace Centers have trained over 1,400 individuals for careers in peace building in more than 115 countries, and program alumni serve as leaders in both governmental and nongovernmental agencies, international organizations, and more.

Rotary District 7410, NE Pennsylvania, invites those interested in learning more about the Rotary Peace Fellowship program to contact: Nancy H. Brittain, District Rotary Peace Fellowship chair, Sayre Rotary, by email to NancyLBrittain@icloud.com or by calling (570) 423-0288. There are opportunities for fully funded Masters' Degree and Certificate programs.

To learn more about the program, applicants are encouraged to visit the Rotary Peace Centers website at www.rotary.org/peace-fellowships.
