Another Interesting Rotary Fellowship
Did you know that there is a Rotary Fellowship for LGBTQ members and friends? It started with a question from Michelle Wilson, a member of the Rotary Club of Athens Sunrise, Ohio.

At the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Michelle asked why there was no Fellowship for LGBTQ people, and added that one should be started.  Before the break-out session had even ended, Sean O’Hara, a member of the Rotary Club of Lake Charles Happy Hour, Louisiana had established a group on Facebook for LGBTQ Rotarians (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer). The LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship was born and Michelle left the meeting with a stack of business cards from people who wanted to be part of the new group.

In between regular Zoom events held in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, members speaking with clubs about promoting diversity, as well as telling the story of being LGBTQ in Rotary.  Additionally, the fellowship is seeking to work with clubs on projects that support the LGBTQ community and to offer resources to clubs that want to be more diverse and welcoming to all.

Take a look at Rotary International’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
As a global network that strives to build a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

A top priority for Rotary is growing and diversifying our membership to make sure we reflect the communities we serve.

We're creating an organization that is more open and inclusive, fair to all, builds goodwill, and benefits our communities. We want people with differing perspectives and ideas who will help Rotary take action to create lasting change in communities around the world.

Through Rotary, you'll find unique opportunities to get involved. Everyone is welcome in Rotary.
All the Best…

Shamantic Healing
Shaman Lawrence Furtsch spoke to the Stroudsburgs Rotary evening meeting about shamanism. Called to help others, he works with individuals and businesses to help individuals suffering from physical or emotional problems. He is available to help people remove obstacles from their past or going through major life transitions. An ancient healing art, Shamanism is practiced globally by tribal communities and indigenous peoples. If you want to know more, Shaman Furtsch can be reached at https://pashamanichealing.com.

Sister Mary Cecilia Draru
Sister Mary Cecilia Draru, Zonal Coordinator for the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, presented a discussion on her personal journey that led to running a school for girls in Uganda. Sr. Draru came from very humble beginnings, born into a large family whose father was a teacher committed to education. She became a refugee while her country was torn apart by war under Idi Amin and she took refuge in the Congo. Once separated from her mother, she was responsible for the family. Until the age of 48, she didn't know peace so she is very aware of problems her young students face. She has vast experience on gender, education and sustainable development in Africa. In 1989, she joined the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu. Her work is with refugees from Sudan, Congo and Rwanda. Since schools won't take child mothers, they founded a school that would provide education and a safe place. They harbor girls that were exposed to violence. The pandemic has severely impacted the support they get to run their program. They are using education as a way to learn how to empower themselves. They are working with young men to resist cultural pressure for early fatherhood and forcing young women. The sisters are working to help this generation break the cycle. Kerry Nix, PDG and Max Feldman from the Newfoundland Rotary accompanied Sister Draru. District 7410 may be looking at this as a project to support next year so stay tuned for more information to help this community.

Stroudsburgs Rotary Club Celebrates 100 Years

Beginning in July of 2021, the Stroudsburgs Rotary will begin the celebration of its 100th Anniversary. Throughout the year, there will be a monthly event to give back to the community through “100 Acts of Kindness”. This underscores the organization's 100 Years of Community Service.

The July kickoff will be to partner with Pocono Mountains United Way (PMUW) on their "Back 2 School Supply Drive 2021". The Club is asking for donations of the following items:
  • Pencil Cap Erasers
  • 5 Subject Spiral Notebooks
  • 2 Pack Composition Notebooks
  • Pocket Folders
  • Glue Sticks
Donors can bring items to either of the two meetings. There are two collection points set up in the community. One will be at the First Keystone Bank, 559 Main St, Stroudsburg. The second is at Jimmy's Ice Cream at 75 Crystal Street, East Stroudsburg. Rotary will then give PMUW the supplies to add to the backpacks of 500 children in the community. The goal is to collect at least 100 of each item to help PMUW attain their objective.

Thanks to you, more Rotary members in your community and around the world have been able to take action and make an impact. Your support of our Foundation meant more projects were possible, more people were served, and more problems were solved.

Because of dedicated donors like you, our Foundation has awarded over 1,900 global grants totaling more than $139 million so far this Rotary year. Together with our partners, we’ve immunized nearly 3 billion children against polio since 1988. Rotary members around the world continue working to keep their communities healthy and safe from diseases like COVID-19.

Your support makes Doing Good in the World possible. Your gifts make it possible for us to respond to some of the world’s most challenging needs in communities close to home and across the globe.

Thank you for your continued support. The Rotary Foundation
