PDG Karen DeMatteo kicked off Polio Day with a video on polio and impressive statistics on the great strides Rotary has made in its initiatives to eradicate polio worldwide. The World Health Organization has reported a 99.9% reduction since 1988. This disease is easily transmitted and targets children under the age of 5 with fatal or long lasting effects that hamper their quality of life for their lifetimes. Rotary has partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to raise billions of dollars. There are only two countries in the world where this exists - Afghanistan and Pakistan and there are dramatic efforts to wipe it out there as well. To recognize Rotary's efforts and heighten awareness of this initiative, the representatives issued a Proclamation recognizing October 24 (Rotary International's date) as Polio Day in PA and Monroe County. State Senator Mario Scavello, Representative Maureen Madden and Mackenzie Strunk from Representative Rosemary Brown's office along with County Comptroller Marlo Merhige and County Treasurer Theresa Johnson presented Proclamations from their respective levels of government.  Thank you for their support in recognizing Rotary's efforts in eradicating this disease. We also had an auction of Leslie Underhill's delicious sourdough bread. Sen Scavello raised the bar pretty high by bidding on and winning the bread for $100. Nobody could beat that bid. Thanks, Sen Scavello - that's a lot of dough!

The Pints and Pinots for Polio Pub Crawl on October 24, 2021 was extremely successful. Many of the Stroudsburg Rotarians came out to do their part to eradicate polio. A very special thank you to Derailed Taphouse, Trackside Bar and Grill, Sycamore Grill, The Lounge, Shawnee Inn River Room, Marita's Cantina, Tolino's Winery, Philly's Pub, and Willowtree Inn for participating in our fundraiser. At least 10% of sales from beer and wine will be donated to help eradicate polio. Thank you to these local restauranteurs for helping us meet our vision of eradicating polio worldwide.
