President's Corner
Tom Farda
Retired restaurateur Tom Farda has been a distinguished member of the community for many years. He is a noted philanthropist who is known for his community contributions. While the owner of Peppe's Restaurant, he was very generous to Stroudsburgs Rotary. He was integral to the success of our evening Satellite club by providing a free meeting space. He supported fundraising initiatives which allowed Stroudsburgs Rotary to provide much needed support to the community. In addition to support for Stroudsburgs Rotary, Mr. Farda is generous with time and funding to many Monroe County initiatives. To recognize his efforts, Stroudsburgs Rotary conferred the coveted Paul Harris award which honors community commitment and dedication.
Joel Penkala, Director of Development for the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC), updated both the luncheon and satellite groups on PEEC initiatives. Started in 1972, it first was an educational facility in partnership with Keystone College at the former Honeymoon Haven. Part of the Tocks Island Dam project, it is now a non-profit physically located within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It serves as an educational area giving urban dwellers an overnight experience so they can experience, appreciate and preserve nature and the environment. There are hiking trails, kayaking and canoeing, including some that are ADA compliant. During COVID, they used the facilities and staff to respond to community feeding programs including Meals on Wheels and Office of the Aging. The latest initiative in development is the Corporate Volunteer Program. The goal is to have groups experience PEEC and then share their experiences. They want to focus on skills building, social/emotional learning, watershed experience and guided hikes. Although COVID hampered in person educational experiences, they embraced technology using Zoom and cameras to share experiences with school students. They are optimistic about giving students and adults in-person experiences to inspire them to become good stewards in the future. For more information and/or to donate or volunteer, visit
Sergio Butron
A recipient of one of Stroudsburg's Rotary Foundation Scholarship sent a thank you letter. Sergio Butron, currently a junior at Columbia University, expressed his gratitude for the "generous scholarship offered to me. This scholarship is used to alleviate the expenses and stress that are associated with attending college... I hope everyone associated with the organization and community is staying safe and healthy during these ardous times and I hope to see everyone in person one day soon."

This is one example of the many ways Stroudsburgs Rotary touches the lives of many in our community. Be rest assured that your efforts pay off and this shows how we are vested in the future of our community. Education is one of Rotary's Key Focus Areas and Stroudsburgs Rotary is committed to ensuring we make this an important part of our mission.
Stroudfest was back full force. Stroudsburgs Rotary had a huge presence thanks to Karen DeMatteo, Jeff Gilbert and Cleo Jarvis, Ann Super, Dave Super, Dave Yarosh, Zerla Bartolome, Gail Kulick, Leslie Pinto, Stacy Rodriguez, John Beljean, Gene Prospero, Kin Roberts, Pete Andrews, Bob Lear, Joan Molloy, Frank Hertig, Barbara Hertig, Jim Becker, Margie Becker, Cleo Jarvis and Cheryl Cloke. Special thanks to Rotarian Rich Berkowitz for providing generator power for snow cone production. The team made 700 snow cones to distribute to the crowd - a refreshing treat on a hot Pocono summer day. We asked the community for donations for Ida Relief and they responded generously by giving $600. US Congressman Matt Cartwright stopped by to get an understanding of the impacts Stroudsburgs Rotary has in the community. He is a former PDG and member of the Abingtons Rotary so gets the Rotary message. It was a wonderful event much appreciated by community and tourists alike. Thanks to all Stroudsburgs Rotarians who participated in raising awareness of our impact in the community. PDG Karen and Jeff did an amazing job coordinating this initiative in a few short weeks. Thanks to all who made it happen.

Eagle Scouts
President Don Hannig requested support for members to represent Stroudsburgs Rotary at any upcoming Court of Honor presentation for Eagle Scouts in our area. Rotarian Clarence "Murph" Murphy faithfully represented Stroudsburgs Rotary for over 25 years. Now they're requesting others to share in this experience. Let President Don or Rotarian Ed Schaefer know if you are willing to represent Stroudsburgs Rotary at this most important milestone event for Scouts who worked so diligently.
